How to design a 3D scroll animation

Plan a scroll-driven 3D product story: camera poses, readable sections, mobile behavior and testing in Orbital 3D.

The approach

A useful scroll animation reveals information as the visitor moves through a page. Start with the story: a product silhouette, a closer look at its construction, then a clear call to action. Three camera poses often communicate more than a long sequence of unrelated rotations.

Plan the page before the timeline

Sketch the text sections and decide what each camera view must explain. Keep the product on one side when text sits on the other. A camera move that crosses your heading may look impressive in the editor and still make the finished page hard to read.

Separate scene motion from page scrolling

Build and preview the scene sequence first. Orbital has timeline and camera controls, while the publishing panel includes scroll-related settings. Test the exported experience in its destination: an embedded scene and the host page can handle scroll input differently. An ordinary iframe does not automatically receive its parent page’s scroll position.

Make it practical

A workflow to start with

  1. Frame the opening view and save a stable composition.

  2. Add a detail view that explains one important feature.

  3. Preview the sequence at a slow pace, then test reversing direction.

  4. Publish to a test page and check trackpad, mouse wheel and touch scrolling.

An example design brief

Start with a specific request.

Create a three-part product story: a full front view, a close-up of the main detail, and a final three-quarter view. Keep the left third clear for HTML copy. Use restrained transitions and avoid a continuous spin.

Use this as a brief for scene work or AI assistance. Inspect the result in the editor; available AI tools depend on your account and plan.

Before you publish

  • The page remains scrollable when the pointer is over the scene.
  • Text and the final action remain available without completing an animation.
  • Mobile gets a simpler composition or a static alternative.

Common questions

Does an embed automatically follow page scroll?

Do not assume it does. Check the export’s scroll settings and test in the actual site. Cross-frame synchronization can require host integration.

How many camera views should I start with?

Start with three meaningful views. Add another only when it explains something the visitor needs to see.
