Create an interactive 3D product showcase

Plan a browser-based 3D product showcase with accurate materials, controlled camera movement, useful details and a mobile test checklist.

The approach

A product showcase should answer a buyer’s questions: what is the shape, how does the finish look, and which details matter? Begin with an accurate model and a short list of those questions. Decorative scenery can wait until the product itself is clear.

Keep the product trustworthy

Check proportions, material assignments and the default camera angle against reference images. Use lighting that reveals edges without changing the perceived finish. A dramatic reflection can make a matte surface appear glossy; review the scene with someone who knows the product.

Design for inspection

Choose useful rotation and zoom limits, then test the scene with touch input. Use hotspots for details that need explanation. Keep price, variants, availability and purchase controls in the storefront unless you have deliberately integrated them; a visual material change does not automatically select a real purchasable variant.

Make it practical

A workflow to start with

  1. Import the product model and inspect its scale and orientation.

  2. Set a clear three-quarter opening view and readable lighting.

  3. Limit interaction to views that help someone evaluate the product.

  4. Publish and test alongside the real product information and purchase controls.

An example design brief

Start with a specific request.

Present this product in a clean studio with neutral lighting. Show its silhouette and main controls clearly. Add a restrained three-quarter opening view and leave room below for product details. Do not alter the model’s proportions.

Use this as a brief for scene work or AI assistance. Inspect the result in the editor; available AI tools depend on your account and plan.

Before you publish

  • The scene matches the actual product finish.
  • A static product image is available while the model loads.
  • Rotating the model does not interfere with the purchase flow.

Common questions

Does changing a model color change a store variant?

Not by itself. Treat visual changes and commerce state as separate until you explicitly connect and test them.

Should I use native Shopify media or an embedded scene?

Native product media suits a standard model gallery. An embedded scene can support a more composed experience; test theme behavior and performance for your specific setup.
